The Derry Flute Band in Toronto is a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive music group that brings people together through the power of traditional flute band music. Rooted in a rich cultural heritage, the band was founded in Toronto in 1908 by Irish immigrants from the County of Derry. We are proud to be part of the diverse and dynamic Greater Toronto Area community. Our band provides a platform for musicians of all ages and backgrounds to come together, learn, and celebrate the joy of music.

Who We Are
The Derry Flute Band is dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional flute band music while fostering a sense of belonging for everyone. We are a non-sectarian band with members from all walks of life, including individuals from different cultural, religious, and social backgrounds. Our primary goal is to provide a safe, welcoming space for anyone interested in learning music, making new connections, and contributing to a positive community.
What We Do
As a community-based band, we perform at a variety of local events, parades, festivals, and celebrations throughout the Greater Toronto Area. From traditional marches and folk tunes to fun and engaging group performances, we aim to bring the joy of music to the streets and hearts of the community.
- Performances & Events: We participate in community parades, local festivals, charity events, and concerts.
- Musical Education & Mentorship: We offer support and mentorship for beginners, providing opportunities to learn and grow as musicians.
- Social Gatherings: In addition to musical practice, we host social events to help our members connect, make friends, and build a strong, supportive network.
Open Membership for All Ages
We are proud to be an all-ages band! Whether you’re 8 or 80, there’s a place for you with the Derry Flute Band. Our members come from a wide range of ages and backgrounds, creating a vibrant and dynamic group that celebrates the diversity of our local community.
- Open to Everyone: Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced musician, you are welcome to join us!
- Volunteers Needed: We are always looking for volunteer musicians, and to help with band activities, events, and outreach programs. Volunteers can help with organizing events, running social media, or providing support at practices.
- Free Membership for Learners: We offer free membership to anyone willing to learn and participate actively. If you’re passionate about music and committed to practicing and growing, we’ll support you every step of the way.
How to Join
Joining the Derry Flute Band is easy! We welcome people of all musical abilities and offer a supportive environment for those who want to learn.

- Attend a Practice: Our regular band practices are open to new members. No prior experience is necessary – just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn!
- Start Learning: We provide guidance, practice sessions, and mentorship for those new to music or the instruments we play, including multiple types of flutes and drums.
- Join the Community: Once you’re comfortable, we’ll welcome you to join our performances, events, and social activities. You’ll be part of a growing, supportive group of like-minded individuals.
Our Instruments
At the Derry Flute Band, our main instruments are flutes, including the C-Piccolo, G-Treble, Concert C and G-Alto, but we also incorporate drums, including the marching side-drum, and bass drum. Whether you’re interested in learning to play the flute or percussion, we provide opportunities for you to grow as a musician, regardless of your starting point.
- Flutes: The heartbeat of our band, playing traditional flute band and military-style marches.
- Drums: Providing rhythm and drive for our performances, adding depth and energy to the music.
If you’re new to any of these instruments, don’t worry! We offer beginner lessons and practice sessions to get you started.
